my dear lucille

Lucille Clifton

dear lucille, dear lucille
did someone teach you
the beauty of truth
did someone preach to you
when you were in your youth

to tell the truth even
when it rips apart the
canvas of constructed lies
or makes ripples in the waters
of the great mississippi gulf-side

the world needs more women like you
with guts glorious as they come
withstanding adversity at it's worse
with words weighs heavy, woman
let 'em flow, lady, let 'em flow
