that place by the sea

I stand and blink in the heavy dust
my eyes burned and blurred
by endless lies
and summer sand pumped from the ocean
in a never ending façade
that there is beauty beneath
the tug-of-war waves
that will suck the sand back out to sea
and with it the dead skin cells
of money well burnt

There is no empathy here
for the waves
only a pining for storm clouds
and a prayer to make them leave
as soon as they’ve resurrected
the dry grass death beneath our feet

I stare out to sea and there is nothing but blue
and the lure of storms yet to happen

And I desire the other side
despite the muted green peace
I find when looking upwards
between the ground and the sky

Give me city lights
and a bar on every corner
give me strip clubs
and a warm body to lie with
if only for tonight
so that I may forget this place
I call home
which leaves me lonely
and dripping with colour
in a grey sand landscape
