Nana and Papi
Last Night...
I sat on my back porch
(AKA) the hood of my car
and watched the neighbors
in the neighborhood behind me.
While wistfully sipping a Red Stripe,
my next door neighbors son came out
he was dusty and muddy, and all smiles
Seems like 5 year olds have the patent
on smiles..... they become quite contagious.
"whatcha doin?" he queried as I swung my legs down
and slid off the top of the car...
"People watchin and dreamin kid"... that's what I told him
then I jumped down and tickle/tackled him to the ground
Amidst the laughter I watched a couple cross the divide
between the neighborhoods..
they looked like they had to be in there early 70's .....
soon they were all but up the hill
as my neighbors little boy shrieked " Nana...Papi!"and it
was then that I realized...these two must be his grandparents.
Nana was round and curvy with long feathered salt n pepper hair
her skin was supple and warm...she looked like a woman
who knew what love was all about...
Papi was tall with olive skin that was thick and weathered
but his eyes...sparkled like he knew the secrets to life.
I watched them as they gathered their grandchild, hand in hand
and walked him down the hill...
He holding her hand and the child's....
Soon they were but spots in the distance, and
I couldn't help but feel a tinge of envy....as I realized....
my time to grow old
with someone ....may never happen...
Who would I grow old with...
Who would I grow comfortable with when my hair turned
more gray than black...
Who would hold my hand or
my grandsons when I was crossing the street with him...
hell no body is with me now
and my grandson is 5.....
I just hope that one day...
I will have a pleasantness come my way
I hope that someone will want to be there
with me when daylight turns to twilight...
I just hope that one day....
I can be like Nana and Papi.
