Seeping Through Concrete
His Eyes Open:
When he wakes he remembers
nothing but falling asleep
from lead to dark to lead.
The star cleaves his skull open
draining it of all quietude.
He flushes himself through doors
ignoring all the exit signs;
the rigmarol is etched
in layers of cracked bone,
layered in a cracked dome.
The cracks seal and the star
becomes a pharos
as the smell of her ocean
cockles towards his retina
inversing each leadened image.
The rain whispers through his skin
then he sings of home
with his car windows down -
but his dreams breathe petrol
and are smashed by pale steel, bowling him
through ripped metal
into abrasive tar;
the star, becoming a spotlight.
Her Eyes Open:
When she wakes she remembers
everything but the rose twilight
from amber flakes to amber skies;
the pasteled star morning
is shed by her hair.
She untangles loose limbs
from her favourite fabrics;
going nowhere with someone in mind:
peach skin in amber cocoons;
cocooned and imbued with star.
Her longing unwraps her;
dust erupts from her eyes
and the light splinters, shards
jabbing through the specs.
Cornered by her own company -
she sings with the windows open.
Curving minor chords under black clouds
as they swerve the arch of earth's skin -
but the clouds stay home
and the amber beams, salute
to the ending of dreams
and a car crashing
down below her window.
