Goodbye Best Friend

It’s been fifteen years now since he was a pup
With loyalty and trust his eyes look up,
The pain and the suffering has become just too much
His tail gently wags with my kind loving touch.

On this his last walk my tears keep on flowing
As he looks at my eyes with a feeling of knowing,
When we get home the kids say goodbye
And my wife pats his head, there’s not a dry eye.

As we drive down the road he’s quiet and still
The vet speaks so calmly the syringe starts to fill,
A small sharp needle relieves all the pain
My best friend’s eyes close not to waken again.

As tears blur my vision on the short drive home
The kids are all crying, I arrive back alone,
His bed looks so empty his toys still surround us
A dog loved so much in a home filled with kindness.

His life was so good & he gave us so much
So much fun and enjoyment so much loyalty and trust,
He just loved to play with the kids he adored
They’d be with him for hours and never get bored.

I guess time will heal the grief we all share
The house feels so cold, so lifeless, so bare,
Life carries on after such a sad end
But my tears at this moment are for my best friend.
