Miracles Dark and Light

- Miracles Dark and Light -

When in another age gone by, I looked out from towered window on high,
An angel amongst my fellow man, yet of sorrows well-acquainted was I...
Looking upon the skies of azure blue, untainted in that time, still so new,
I wished for but a sign of heavenly art, to make all my dreams come true.
And lo! A dove as from some tale of saints and miracles circled ever low,
Touching the banners upon the old castle battlements, free of earthly woe.
And it seemed to me that it asked, in very much the tongues men speak:
'Oh fallen one, what seek you in your heart, for not all hearts are weak?'
As if in madness, I said aloud, as though the dove could hear my speech:
'Oh dove, all I seek is a fair maid's love, and that is all I hope to reach!'
For what need had I of wealth or power, when these bring no happiness,
But rather are they the cause of so little peace, and so much dire distress!
And so the dove said unto me: 'In three days hence, do but wait and see.'

Unto that lofty perch in that tower, on high, I turned my gaze up to the sky...
With each gaze, a prayer to the heavens I gave, and with each one a sigh.
The azure of the horizon turned swiftly to deeper hues of the afternoon air,
And swift as the wind, a raven descended, where before the dove did dare.
As had the fair white bird, the black one spoke in speech like my very own:
'Oh fallen one, I have returned, but changed from the desire in your soul!'
Knowing not the meaning of this, I asked in a wonder such curious things:
'Oh raven, if my desire is dark, then I will repent of it in a voice that sings!'
But the raven assured me that my desire was pure; this change was sure,
A certain destiny had deemed it so, by the hand that moves us all the more.
Contented in this, I bade the bird tell me how my wishes might be granted,
And for some time it spoke it's secrets to me, as for many hours it bantered.
Ending with the cryptic phrase: 'In seven days hence, do but wait for me.'

On the seventh day, I made my way up the tower stairs unto the window,
Laboring in my steps, I arrived late and beheld the golden afternoon glow.
For the third time, I stood watching the heavens with my eyes unblinking...
Until the moon was full and the stars bedecked night's gown, all a-winking.
As instructed in secret by the raven, I called out to the night with my heart,
And the night responded, for the stars seemed so fainter, the air more dark.
Whilst on the wings of this starless eve, a human form descended the wind,
A maiden pale as the moon, with hair black as the night and darker than sin.
She spoke in a voice, which I understood, and told me much that gladdened:
'I am here to end all your loneliness, lest your heart more deeply saddens!'
Welcoming her into the tower, I took her into my arms and we danced wild,
Until well past the witching hour I was enchanted, by her manner so mild...
When thirteen chimed a distant church bell, the maiden said: 'It is destiny!'

They say that love makes of us, things fair and sometimes things more fell,
But of my fate in that bygone age, only these cryptic words will I hereby tell:
That for a span of seven years and three days, I knew delights unburdened,
Until the appointed time passed and the maiden's heart seemed hardened.
She stood imperious as a goddess of old, and told me that a price was due...
For every dream I dared to dream, and for every dream she made come true.
Into her arms one last time I was drawn, and upon the wind we flew so far,
That we flew beyond the world entire, and came to rest beneath a distant star.
When once more to the world I was granted my return, my heart was lost...
And to this day I burn within to know such rapture, heedless of the true cost.
For what is this world but the dream, from which we awaken to high heaven,
Or low hell, and see that there is little difference between dove and raven...
When miracles dark and light descend, we have but to wait a span and see.

When shall I know a love that is endless, when shall my quest be at its’ end?
I know that my love is out there, somewhere: a maiden, a lover, and a friend.
Waiting by the window, in my lonely home, I hope for some errant messenger,
For this time our love will be without ceasing; she will complete me, and I her.
I make no bargains with spirits on high, I just hold on to my dreams and cry...
With faith in heart that a maiden will come, to share a love nothing can deny.

It is eve, and the stars are sparkling above; I long to dance a waltz of night,
So come to me, gentle maiden, with your lovely eyes shining fair and bright!
Come to me, and let us dance forever, no darkness to take from us our delight.
