Feels Like I Almost Cheated On You
Last night I went out hunting
I said to myself, "I might just shoot one, maybe"
Even though you are so much finer looking
I almost cheated on you baby
Last night I almost gave up
Almost lost what I've been saving for you Maggie
And though I haven't a clue if you want it
Feels like I cheated on you baby
I almost shared passion with her
She said, "She'll never know so come and make me
It's just for tonight so how could it matter?
It ain't cheatin' if she ain't your lady"
Her legs felt extremely hot
She wanted everything she could take from me
She asked me if I was going to come or not
Feels like I cheated on you baby
I thought about you just then
Saying to her "I am already guilty
That kind of lovin' you can get with other men
And I'd rather wait for my lady"
All I had to do was try
She was cute and sexy but she was no lady
Why I didn't lay her you should question why
Feels like I cheated on you baby
She isn't the only one
That's put the pressure on and nearly had me lately
But love means so much more than a little fun
Felt like I would be cheating Maggie
Last night I went out searching

To fill the empty hole my lust went looking

Alrighty then, I know I am not the best judge of my own work, but relatively speaking, I feel that this is my worst poem ever. On the other hand, maybe it was "Too Hard To Overlook" That was number 1 on my worst ever list, but as I was looking over my list, there are still one or two that I know are missing. I am going to really fig though some old papers to find them. But maybe it's best I don't. These two are pretty bad and if you can imagine worse than this, you probably don't want to read them... lol. I can laugh now, but I took it seriously enough when I wrote it. Well, I was all of 19 and not very experienced in writing poetry or having relationships. jj

Well first of all sir let me start by saying I believe it is far from the worse. Honestly how can one judge anothers feelings. I like the repetitive last lines then how they switch but stay with the same rhythm. It beats on time each line. I myself am my own worse critic. I judge every single word I write. so you can imagine how ong it takes me to get just a line down if I can't get the word right. When I read you I read a man putting his heart on the table and oh so humbly. Your poetry is beautiful because it is 100% genuine. Much respect.

i don't read you often, jj, mostly just because i'm not a huge fan of end-of-line rhyming right now; but i have to say, this certainly kept my attention. i think the repetition and rhyme goes with the theme of having these second thoughts and it's a much more original idea than *actually* cheating on someone, or even giving in on these feelings that you have of keeping yourself for someone who may or may not care.

Thank you for reading and commenting Jes...! I do try not to make silly rhymes and sound too sing songy even when I do rhyme. I probably only have a handful of poems that don't rhyme, but I don't do it on purpose anymore. It just comes that way now because I have been doing it for so long. This poem was one of my earlier works at a time when I was trying very hard to come up with rhymes and not sound forced. I actually don't like reading poems that don't rhyme, but even worse are ones that do and sound too nursery rhymish. Meter has a lot more to do with that than anything. But I'm not going to get into all that now. I just find it interesting that you like it in this particular poem, as it was one of my earliest surviving poems and written in a way that I don't write anymore. Maybe I should go back and start over... jj
