in search of summer

Forgotten eyes stare out
at the frozen calm
of an ice-chilled river
filled with the distant
memories of youth

A whisper of wind
on a sun kissed cheek
warm with the glow
of discovery
fading now
in the ice-bitten depths
reflecting an indigo sky
of fairy lights
where the ghosts of yester
dance

An old card kaleidoscope
discarded on the frozen earth
wilts slowly
upon the frosted ground
like the minutes of a life
long lived
waiting for the final call
of a grandfather clock
lived in the cylinder of
coloured card and beaded glory

A soundless ripple
spreads out like spilled ink
across the midnight river
and beneath the twinkling
of the fire kissed stars
an old man slips
into the cold stream
in search of
sun kissed skin
and the memories of youth
where summer seemed endless
