15yr'oldsday-after-birthday1967,
thee day He died,
I tremblin front of me plasticWhite
Motorola rad'io WBAI playin Trane
memorial marathon- never
heard nor i'magined music'people
makin such'of'a freeWild
spiritSound "a joyful noyze unto..."
a cry for Life beyond our
closed-mind, petrified-soul mundanity....
th'death of an elder,older than dear
(temporarily insane-wit-prejudiceFear)
Dad, FDNYfireman, DixHills rescueSquad
volunteer who responded to th'call
from Candlewood Path taking that
rather young elder for his last ride.
i did not know, until years later, that
Trane was 'a neighbor' & that for 2years
previous to '67 my jrHS schoolbus stopped
in front of his house t'pick up Bobby Wynn,
my basketball buddy, who was the Coltrane's
babysitter....Bobby never said word one
about th'Coltranes til years later.
he thought that from 'the sounds comin
outta that house...they must be crazy'
he never 'got it'.....like Dad, "one'a the other fellas
said 'that guy we took to the hospital yesterday
was a famous musician'...i never heard of him.
just another sick nigg...o'sorry, i mean neeegro"
