You have to write the bad ones
to know what’s truly great
You have to know what passion is
to understand your hate
You have to hear the awful truth
to comprehend a lie
You have to be betrayed
to know on whom you may rely
You have to fail hard sometimes
to know your own success
You have to lose somebody close
to love what you possess
You have to doubt once in your life
to know when you are sure
You have to come within death’s grasp
to know you can endure.

...you express here, Arryn. I'm always a tad suspicious of poems which touch on writing, but you overcome that for me with ease. I'm left with the word valiant to sum it all up.

this is perfectly executed poem. The sort of solid verse I would love to learn and recite as a lesson to my children.

To me this says you need to have life experienced, but have you learned from it.. love it
I don't actually think this poem is cold, I think it is clear that you are utterly aware of pain and it is a way of dealing with it. You try and do this with some discretion but it seems to me, with this poem, you are almost trying to convince yourself that all the toils are worth it. It doesn't seem you whole heartedly know that they are. I think it's brilliantly simple and it has hidden depth. I like it. Good work Arryn.
