I Am Death

- I Am Death -
From Death’s Perspective

You cannot know the dire sights that I have seen,
For I have seen them all, through every living eye.
None can love me, for to do so is most obscene,
For to truly love Death, one must first wholly die!
So many have courted me, and sought my favor,
Sacrificing unto me, in wars and in blood loosed.
Yet, I do not want such evil laid upon my door…
And so I cry, as mortal sins must come to roost.
I am so beautiful a maiden, that you would weep,
To behold my countenance beneath the dark veil!
Yet to love me is to perish, your blood to seep…
Before my altar, before my form as bone so pale.

Yet love and I are not so distant in our relation…
For I must have compassion, and mercy, as well!
And so love and I are linked, in ancient tradition.
To many, I am the gate to both Heaven and Hell!
Without me you would live forever, even in pain,
With no one to release you from your suffering…
Death defines life, its’ meaning and its’ pure gain.
I wait as a patient lover, at the end of everything!
Through my kiss are souls changed, even reborn.
My wings enfold the righteous and the wicked…
I am dusk, even as life and light are oft the morn.
Winter is my old season, the season of the dead!

Why fear me, mortals, when I only wish to help?
For without me, age would increase without end.
Twisting body and mind, ever decreasing health!
I am not your foe but I can, eventually, be friend.
This is the curse of being me, as only I can bear!
I am eternally hated and loved, in equal measure.
One day I will come to deliver you from all care,
And in my kiss, you will experience my pleasure.
Do not hasten to my side, enjoy spring’s season,
And summer too, before winter snows must fall!
Ask not why I must be, for there is no reason…
I simply exist, and one day you will heed my call.
