Life force

What makes them cling to life?

The old men stooped over their Zimmer frames.
The withered mothers, grandmothers, struggling with their change at the checkout.

Why don't they just give up?

What force compels them onwards through decrepitude?

Could it be the morning birdsong?
The scent of blooming jasmine?
The giggles of a toddler?
The smile of a new mother?

What force compels them onwards through decrepitude?

Perhaps the memory of their youth?
The thought of their first love?
The sight of the Eiffel Tower when they first saw it?
The sound of music,their music?

What force compels them onwards through decrepitude?

Maybe the smell of their lost lovers scarf?
The sepia toned pictures of their yesteryears?
Their grandson who visits and listens with the patientce of the young?
Their next cup of hot tea and a biscuit?

What force compels them onwards through decrepitude?

I'm heading that way and just thought I'd ask.

Author's Note
From my back deck in the early morning I could see a very old man from a nursing home pushing his walker on his morning exercise.....made me wonder.
