From a distance

From a distance
you cant see anything
but the outline of who I am
just a silhouette against
a graying sky...
From a distance....
you cant see where my soul
has cracks... and fissures
that bleed
into the depths of me
From a distance ....
my patchwork looks like
perfection....seemless even
Yet ...here I stand
stoic as a mirage of water
to a thirsty man
From a distance....I help you
see of me...
only what I want you to see
For if you came nearer...
I just wouldnt be able to breathe
and to breathe.... is what I need
to do most of all right now...
slow...and steady palpatations
to quiet the deafening anxiety
That wants to scream my every
indescretion to the world...
This demented doppleganger...
that lives inside my skin....
poking holes in my patched exterior
screaming obscenities through my flesh
giving new meaning to the phrase
"flesh wound"....as my internal history
is etched in my eyes like stained
glass windows...with small cracks
but you cant see theses things...
From a distance....
The Monster in me... only seems
to be the outline of serene...
a gentle thing...
But you cant see it pulling...
you cant see it tearing....
you cant see it .....
making me suffer.
Holding me prisnor ....
and you think Im smiling
From a distance.
all you can see is the illusion
I have created....
just to keep the beast sated
because its always hungry...
For new and curious smiles
to devour...unsuspecting ones
who ....dont know its power
From a distance...it may even look like
Im dancing....when in fact
I am wrestling with this beast...
for I no longer willingly allow it
to feast....upon my soul....
as I am steadfastly pushed to the brink
I wonder...now
what must you think...of me
As theses tears of anguish
burn salted streams down my face...
Not to worry....
From a distance....my tears only
Look like rain....
so I smile....
when you offer me an umbrella.
