When People Don’t Talk

When people don’t talk
The space between words widens
What’s left unsaid takes on new meaning
All the things I thought you meant
Now mean…something
And I’m left to fill in the blanks myself
Because you choose not to say anything
 
Maybe you think you’re protecting me
Or you’re ashamed
Or you’re angry
Or you don’t want me to have feelings for you
You might have misunderstood something I’ve said
 
Flawed humans mirror flawed humans
We’re all clinging to the same life raft
 
So we tango
But we don’t touch each other
While the space between us grows wider
 
Unless one of us is brave enough to ask
And the other is brave enough to be honest
We will never know
Will we?
