do you like pie?
do you remember the
last time you had a
great slice of pie
or,
where you had that
great slice of pie
like in some art deco,
silver streak train
car diner
the one with the
stools that spun
sitting in front of
the counter
the diner with a Tuesday
night blue plate special
a diner where lonely
old men would eat,
men so old that the space
between one heart beat
and the next might never
arrive
a diner where most of
the waitresses are old,
look tired with bags under
their eyes and still had a smile
as warm and friendly as a new
spring morning and called you,
"Honey", when they took your order
a diner where your
grandparents,
parents knew
the owner
the diner that always was
there on the same corner
of the same street in the
same town or city
always there like the
sun setting in the west
always there like war
and the rumors of war
always there like the
promise of summer
and the hope of love
returning
NOW THERE WAS A REAL
PLACE TO HAVE A SLICE
OF PIE
pie like:
apple with the chunks
of crystal sugar on top
cherry where the cherries
came from the tree chopped
down by George Washington
himself
peach with peaches as
sweet as a summers
night in Georgia
and coffee strong
enough to kick your
ass down a flight of
stairs
so come on
stop whatever you're
doing
grab your coat
let's jump into the
old blue 66 dodge
dart
head on down to a
forgotten American
dream
and get some
pie
see you there
