One Winter In North Wales
The temperature dropped to -19c
I ventured out into it
Dressed like a yeti
There was no wind
Everywhere was frozen, and still
And a strange silence, as if sound had frozen
Then i remembered a science documentary
Where a scientist demonstrated in temperatures the same
As we now had in the village
Firstly throwing a cup of cold water into the air
Then watching as it fell as water to the ground
The part of this demonstration that wowed me
Was when she threw a cup of scalding hot water into the air
As it fell to the ground as snow!
So i replicated this experiment to my partner, and our daughter
And was delighted that it did exactly the same as the scientists
For me this was like a kind of natural magic
And that i had this rare opportunity to act it out
The frozen landscape in this winter wonderland
Was awash with an intrinsic beauty
It wasn't just the cold that took my breath away
Icy water trickled along the half frozen stream
At the bottom of our garden
Where i'd planted a weeping willow by it's side
The willow appeared to have frozen tears on its leaves
The beautiful tranquility of this scene kissed my soul
As it still does today
