Journal Entry: An atheist's prayer

To the nameless entity that shaped my being and breathed life into this form, I come to you (or it) with a heart of longing and fear. Some say we're fearfully and wonderfully made, crafted with intention and care but I think probably not. I'm only clay in the random hands of nature and fate, given life one day and returned to dust the next.

How are we fired with complex threads of life? Through some divine mystery, we have been blessed with existence and have felt the heat of love's embrace. As humans, we cherish vessels of pleasure but continue on or our paths of aging and decline.

Is there no escape from the haunting fears that cloud my mind? I obsess on my inevitable death. Will I live long enough to see my daughter grow from a child to a woman?

If I can do nothing more than savor the sweetness of human desire before death comes, that is enough because that is all there is.
