Change the Locks
scatterbrained,
feathers and pecking,
thoughts quick,
frantic checking.
the door is locked,
footsteps approach,
sweat sliding down,
a creeping roach.
It looks in your eyes,
you have no disguise.
knob turning,
knee hitting the wood,
still locked in a trance,
be understood.
one-click,
two-click,
three-click,
done.
time standing still,
yet persisting forward,
the door is now open,
you are cornered.
a question is asked,
yet you do not hear it.
rain hits the ground,
and the house remains unlit.
the figure moves fast,
you are now on your feet.
ears still ringing,
head admitting defeat.
wobbly shapes invade,
vision is blurring,
heart beating loud,
and thoughts are slurring.
a wet soup of words
spills around,
your head, your hairline,
they fall to the ground.
the ground comes close,
kissing your forehead.
darkness invades-
-- -- -- --
rap tap tap,
the window chatters,
eyes open,
and fiction is shattered.
this room is different,
yet not unknown.
the bed is warm,
you know it's your own.
rain is still falling,
heart slowing down,
calm fills the air,
and nestles around.
it all was a dream,
a delirious vision,
pulling up the covers,
you laugh with derision.
relaxing each tense muscle,
they are due for a rest,
head on the pillow,
eyes quietly protest.
a scurry,
a touch,
an itch,
a scratch.
fingers bump,
something uninvited,
blankets fly off,
the anomaly sighted.
locked in a battle,
first to blink loses,
eyes locked on eyes,
who last refuses?
the creature so small,
with 6 little legs.
A roach.
In your bed.
Like the one.
In your head.
feathers and pecking,
thoughts quick,
frantic checking.
the door is locked,

a creeping roach.
