Embrace the Wolf

A malaise envelops me
whenever I think about hugging the wolf.

Feel the exhaled scalding breath, delivering
chills, fur tracing my clothing like a sea
anemone gliding over my weakened corpse,
paws hold me while claws dig into me.

I shudder, standing helplessly again,
the swan inside me weeping for escape
from the sickening, gut-wrenching embrace
that withers my remains, sutures my lips.

Unable to recoil, skin the lamb bare
and reveal the wolf beneath.
