Hallowed Firmament
When I describe in glowing terms
September skies that I've adored,
I thought them heavens, best explored,
with what an aspiration affirms...
betokened so by cirrus white,
so thin adrift among the blue,
mingling with the contrail spew
long after jets are out of sight.
These things define that vast expanse
over a leafy sunset gold
to contrast with autumnal cold...
enough to switch from shorts to pants.
Then watch the hummingbirds alight,
just for a moment, on a twig;
thin adrift in a sky so big...
those glowing terms...took angel flight.
