It's artist thing.
If I have enough of something I can usually find an artistic use for it.  I like the rough texture of chopsticks and they mount well.

I don't see books. The painting looks like the spines of many vinyl records in ok to fair condition. Cool concept & poem.

I bought a close out on 200 pairs of United Airlines chopsticks.  It was super cheap rather than buying them in much smaller quantities.  Then I gave up eating sushi for various reasons.  What to do with them ?

Do you paint them first, or mount & then paint? It's very cool. Definitely looks like a well-loved collection of albums or magazines. I wouldn't have thought to do this with chopsticks, but that's why you're the artist & I'm not!

I mounted them first.  
I knew I was going to use the oil pastels because of the thickness of how they apply.
They are fun to work with so the result actually was pleasing.  I used to eat more sushi but haven't been doing so lately so an art project was in order.
