The newspapers say he was standing by the boardwalk. Onlookers who were interviewed that day say he just disappeared. Those interviewed a few days later had a different story. They say he pushed the tenor sax base-first into the sand so as to stand it up. He stretched out his arms, loudly shouted "I am not my shadow," and in a burst of fire he was vaporized leaving only a faint dusting of ash that fell upon the sunny sand. In the weeks to come, stories varied even more wildly.
