Just like that

It was over a large
Dunkin’ coffee
that I realized …

fuck

It happened.

It fucking happened
just like that

Just like that
we jumped off a cliff
into water so mountain-cold
that it sucked my breath
from my body
and stopped my heart

And just like that
you revived me on the shore,
a hand on my
waist as your
tongue traced
your name
in my mouth,
warm sun
on our skin
as I melted
to life

and just like that
I didn’t get
my clothes from the floor
to make an awkward
hookup exit

I stayed

I stayed

I stayed awake to
watch you sleep
and
the slow rise and fall
of your chest
syncopated my
dreams to your
inhalations

and I woke later
to your tender
lovemaking,
as passion-filled
and ravenous
as our crazy
furniture-wrecking
fucking
the night
before

but the hunger
felt different
in daylight

just like that
I touched your arm,
and laughed hysterically
at a joke you made
over a cup of coffee
as if your arm
were a rail to
a reality
I didn’t see
created

but it was

we were

and it is

just like that
