The Promise
You always hide your scars
You feel ugly inside
Within the smile on your lips
There's a sadness that's belied
What's beneath the surface
You keep hidden away
Always wearing a mask
As you go throughout your day
The person that others know
It isn't you at all
Nothing but a big display
When in truth you feel small
The more people around you
The more alone you feel
They can't understand
That this you isn't real
Inside of your silence
Is where you find peace
A refuge from the feelings
You're unable to release
People don't want to know
The pain that you keep
The tears that you can't cry
The anguish that runs deep
Its easier for them to believe
The lie you show the world
Its uncomfortable for them to see
The frightened little girl
But when I look at you
I see everything you are
I see the trauma buried away
I see every scar
In those scars I see beauty
Strength that you have gained
Kindness, love and selflessness
The hope you have retained
Destined to do great things
Make this world a better place
A future full of joy
You need only to embrace
I know these things cuz I have felt
The power that you hold
A warmth has taken over
A heart that once was cold
You extended your hand to me
You didn't let me sink
You pulled me back in
When i was teetering on the brink
You searched for me
Wouldnt let me stay lost
Might not be here today
If our paths hadn't crossed
We made each other a promise
If I stay then you stay
We'll keep each other above water
Make sure we're OK
I hope that you truly know
The way that I feel
The love I have for you
Is something that is real
Know that I accept you
For all that you are
In the darkness all around
You shine like a star
I know that repetition
Is what makes things feel true
I'll tell you you're amazing
Until you believe it too
You feel ugly inside
Within the smile on your lips
There's a sadness that's belied
What's beneath the surface
You keep hidden away
Always wearing a mask
As you go throughout your day
The person that others know
