Oral History
Oral history of my tribe
stories told and tales passed down
told in hush tone whispered
oral history we hold dear
alphabets were unknown
history was told through tales
some in long intricate chants
most in narratives from the wise
the elders knew of the ancient lore
understood the taboos and law
through their parents and grandparents
and they from the generations before
we travelled from our troubled land
after the hills were no longer fertile
and the tribal wars began to escalate
through jungles we walked in single files
this and more stories told to us orally
as we sat around the warm fire
listening to a distant beating of gongs
signaling a wedding to be held tomorrow
stories told and tales passed down
told in hush tone whispered
oral history we hold dear
alphabets were unknown
history was told through tales
some in long intricate chants
most in narratives from the wise
the elders knew of the ancient lore
understood the taboos and law
through their parents and grandparents
and they from the generations before
we travelled from our troubled land
after the hills were no longer fertile
and the tribal wars began to escalate
through jungles we walked in single files
this and more stories told to us orally
as we sat around the warm fire
listening to a distant beating of gongs
signaling a wedding to be held tomorrow

Dear G,
Not only wonderfully written but made me think what a wonderful tradition seemingly sidelined. Listening to stories of lineage and history from our elders is a lost art. I enjoyed this poem and its history. Lovely write. H🌷

Dear H, thank you so much for reading and commenting:) honoured as always. Yes, our people have our own oral history. Local scholars are trying to collect and document them before they disappear.

Beautiful piece Grace. Reminds me of my grandmother and how she'd tell family stories and situations she found herself in all those years. Lately she's showing signs of dementia, so those stories are no longer, so we must all appreciate the oral history from our family elders.

Dementia! How awful. But then what she has related before will ever be precious to her grandchildren. Thank you for reading Wally, so kind of you.
