Where Do Poems Come From?

It struck me
When I watched you sleeping
Crouching into yourself as if building a fortress with your own body
Stretching your arms and your legs as if trying to reach something that always escaped you
Raising and shaking your head with the sort of conviction I've wished I had
It struck me
As I was saying
When I watched you sleeping
And by the way you looked like a child again
And I wanted to hug you
But you pushed me away with a condescending gesture
You were fighting dragons
Naturally
And I wanted to stand by the bedroom door with my arms crossed to protect your dreams
But really I just wanted to make myself as vulnerable as you were
It was only fair
But I keep missing my point
Damn it
It struck me
When I watched you sleeping
How beautiful you were
It sounds stupid
I know
But I don't mean just beautiful to me
I mean Beautiful
Like the real thing
Like It was actually coming out of you
And I had to close my book and stare
Helpless
While It surrounded me
I know
It is so creepy
How we rationalize
The truth is
I was just trying to read
And there was nothing coming out of you
And you were pushing me out of the bed as you usually do
Rolling away with the sheets
Closing my book with your restless hands
Over and over
And I was supposed to be mad
so mad
But I couldn't stop smiling
