Yearning

I’ve wondered a thousand wishes
For they’ve been numbered,
like God counts the stars
Within each wish, is but a tiny thought
Original or not
They rest in me, I sleep beside them

I’ve called a thousand wishes to the stand
Lined them up like an executioner positions their criminal prey
To ask each one their name. They have a name.
Silence is a scream to me, those are intrusive thoughts I try to discard.
They never want to leave, and even when the seconds pass, they barge back in

I’ve begged a thousand wishes
to set my tortured soul free
No wish has ever rescued me. Not one.
Is this how a person drops their hopes and dreams?
I sit nervously as one day shifts to the next
Because I know there’s a wish to be fulfilled
It will notice the miserable pain of longing
It must be there, with so many wishes amongst us
Truly, I believe, from a thousand wishes,
there is one yearning for you and me
There has to be.
