Alive So Many Times

People kill themselves over financial loss
 
I chose to work harder
 
People kill themselves over lost love
 
I got over it
 
People with complicated brain chemistry have a high suicide rate
 
I haven't succumbed
 
People kill themselves over maddening injustices
 
I wrote more poetry
 
Close to one million people
die by suicide every year
 
That could have been me
so many times over
 
It could have been so many of us
 
But we're still here
 
Grateful
More often than not
