They Always Were

Destiny smacks an interesting fate
Often told that they had to wait
What did those kids know
Just two fools in love

"Synchronized with the rising moon
Even with the evening star
They were true love written in stone
They were never alone, they were never that far apart"

Scorn and ridiculed for they weren't
Different races meant different worlds
Yet they kept on going, on and on
Transcended by a love for all the stars

"And we who couldn't bear to believe they might make it
We got to close our eyes
Cut up our losses into doable doses
Ration our tears and sighs"

For some it could never be true
But then what could they do
Couldn't block the hearts
No obstacle would stop their chart

"You could see them on the street on a Saturday night
Everyone used to run them down
They're a little too sweet, they're a little too tight
Not enough tough for this town"

The devotion they had broke some walls
Even changed some of those laws
For even a cynic could not stop their state
Oh yes those efforts were oh so late

"Oh, hold them up, hold them up
Never do let them fall
Prey to the dust and the rust and the ruin
That names us and claims us and shames us all"

For those lovers who may lose the way
Pay no heed to what the haters say
As long as the two of you hear it
Find strength in the spirit

"And yet you are not too young to know
The love will last though years may go
And then some day they may recall
You were not too young at all"
