the wealthy couple
The wealthy couple
who live on an island in the Far East
but once a year, they visit Europe
every year when I see them, they have changed
Alas, I wish it had been for the better
both are followers of a health regime concocted
by a Guru of the type that prays on the rich
they are now advanced middle-aged (below 61
and in the hope of staving off the time of elderliness
they trim and live on a lettuce a day.
Their effort are valiant but in vain time always win
At a distance and in the afternoon light, they look fine
like upper-middle-class people generally do,
She looks like a crow that has stolen a canary
plumage, but her match stick arms and legs
tells of the losing battle, and her conversation
consist of diets and clothes and important
art exhibition coming up, where one can meet
the right sort of people.
He, her husband, is still slim (too slim ?) and plays golf several
times a week, but his eye sockets are dark and
tells of loneliness and a silent disappointment
a sadness that comes about when a partner let
the dominant person decides the outcome of
a life spent together.
Soon, they will be back on the island, where
all are middle-aged and served by the local young.
