do you remember those old films where the detective always wore an overcoat
whether it was cold or raining or
not
and preferably with a trilby on his head
mostly shot
in black and white
everything always seemed to turn out alright
but now he’s dead

Film noir! Or sounds like, anyway. The one I thought of while reading this was Columbo! Always wore an overcoat! My father used to make me watch that show with him to teach me how to act dumb to get information I needed. "See?! It makes others drop their guard when they think they're smarter than you." he'd say.

thinking of old B movies, cops and robbers, the emotionally troubled private detective and the (and of course it’s entirely irrelevant) attractive young woman whom he saves from the gallows, without ever taking his coat off.

Who half the time betrayed him by turning out to be the perpetrator rather than damsel! But, yes, I know what you're referring to - I just couldn't help but think of Columbo!
