Autumn Rain

Fat drops of rain splat against a canvas
of damp orange leaves.
The woodland floor is covered in them,
parting only where the mossy green tree
roots surface a few flights above soil level.

I sit at the base of a tree so wise and sculpted
it makes me believe in the supernatural.
Several squirrels dart around the copper and terracotta
floor and I count them as they move.
Glimpses of fluffy grey tails clambering up trees and dancing overhead,
performing stunts from branch to branch.
Confident in my stillness, nature starts to welcome me into its home.

The damp tree limbs above me let out an almighty downpour,
responding to the squirrels frantic choreography.
I can feel the droplets as they land on my hood and the sound
of their muffled splash soothes me, as I romanticise the scene
from within the comfort of my waterproofs.

A bird squawks in its chosen rhythm
and I choose mine. In for 4, out for 6.
I'm unsure how much time has passed until a golden retriever
sprints enthusiastically through the seasons melody.
The forest retreats, and I pick myself up until the next time.
