Dear friend

One day I know I'll love you the way you need,
ever since we met, you kept me safe
even when that was a difficult deed.
You were there for the miscarriage
and not one but both failed marriages.
I remember being young and fearless,
you did your best to keep me tearless
despite the constant commotion
you showed such sweet devotion.
I've mistreated you over the years, I know that,
yet you're still here with me, standing flat
I've called you ugly and worthless and lazy
told you nobody would love you, how crazy
they would have to be
to look past the awful monstrosity.
I've cut you, tried to drown you in alcohol,
slumped you down in the hall,
caused you such misery it makes me sick,
but you still stood beside me despite the ick.
You've been there through the loss of Her,
and to say you're the best is for sure
an understatement if ever was one.
You've been there when I pointed a gun
at you and screamed at you for being alone
yet you've never asked me to atone.
Yes my dear friend, we've had ups and downs
but I wear my regret like a gown,
one day, one sweet day my friend
I'll figure out how to love you in the end.

Author's Note
If you've ever had a conversation with me, deep behind the jokes and smiles, you'll know my level of self hatred. I've done nothing but harm to my body for so long in an effort to not be me, this is an apology of sorts.
