Conversation Between Friends

“You’re not showing yet?”

“No, it’s only been about ten weeks,” Lauryn said. “The doctor said my baby bump might start to show in a month or so.”

“I was reading an article called “Lucky 13.” It said around that same time I could expect my breasts to get bigger and my nipples to get browner. Sounds like fun.”

The two laughed. A few were sitting at the bar but it was early afternoon so tables were empty.

“I’m so excited for you,” Megan said.

Megan was Lauryn’s best friend. They were opposites in some ways. Megan only had sex with a couple of guys the whole time she was dating. When she got engaged, she and Jerry decided to wait until their wedding night.

“Different subject but did you and Jerry really wait until your wedding night?”

“Wait for what? Oh, that. Well, not technically.” Megan blushed and looked to see in anyone was close. “We had sex two months into our relationship. The next week he asked me to marry him. When we met with his pastor, he encouraged us to abstain until our wedding night as a way of adding significance to our physical relationship.”

“And you did it?” Lauren blurted out.

“Pretty much.”

“And what does ‘pretty much’ mean?” said Lauryn her lips tightening in a thin smile.

Megan was quiet until she realized Lauryn would wait for an answer.

“We did some mutual masturbation. We still do sometimes.”

Lauryn looked out the window of the little coffee shop. “I remember seeing my parents do that when daddy was still at home. I thought it was beautiful but kinda scary.

“Why scary?” Megan asked.

“It felt scary later when daddy touched me the way he was touching mother.”

Now Lauryn blushed and looked around. “I’m sorry. You’re the only person I could say that to.”

“It’s OK Lauryn.”

Megan?”

“Yes.”

“Would you adopt my baby?” Lauryn said.

Then she continued. “I think she’ll be beautiful. Her father is smart. If she were raised by you and your husband, she’d become a good person.”

“I’ll talk to Jerry about it. We’re wanting to have children. Just not this soon but we’ll consider it. I’m honored that you would trust us.”

“Yes, trust is an important thing. I know that now,” Lauryn said softly.

Author's Note
I wrote this in third person like an earlier dialogue. It seems to help me look objectively at what happened and give me a clearer view of things. It's also a good writing exercise for me. I edited this pic of Jerry and Megan.
