Downtown
there's a single mom
that will walk the streets tonight
had a 9 to 5
tried to do things right
she got laid off
and now she feels lost
everywhere is looking
just not for her
all she really needs is a chance
nowhere to turn to now
still she has mouths to feed
will do just about anything
so all her pride she will swallow
this uncertain gloom lingers
praying, maybe if only
downtown is where the fortunate go
never second guessing
the tears of those who are broken
they never had to feel such hurt
so they just keep walking
a young man will fight for his country
seeing things that no person should see
returning to a place he doesn't belong
trying to forget the horrors in his brain
but never will things be the same
because he’ll quit his job
runaway from his family
end up homeless on the streets
drinking his nights away to kill the pain
maybe if he could find help
but that help is reserved for the rich
so in his head he screams
maybe if only
downtown is where the fortunate go
never second guessing
the tears of those who are broken
they never had to feel such hurt
so they just keep walking
a brother and sister go to bed hungry
their resentment grows inside
hearts painted black
their once loving father leaves them
this time it's for good
a mother cries
filled with regret and loneliness
struggling to pay the bills
lost hope and no more phone calls
the children lash out
sister can't take it and leaves this would
brother gets hooked on bad habits
while their mother thinks to herself
maybe if only
