Image for the poem just like that

just like that

over and over
i pled
i clawed and clawed
and i bled
until bloodied fingertips
were dripping with shame
i screamed and screamed
until choking on blame

i screamed
until screams
no longer came—

the phone rang,

from
s o m e w h e re
 a voice
tried to explain

and just like that
my life

would never be the same
