bath sheba

One night in Jerusalem, King David was walking upon his rooftop
when he spotted a beautiful woman bathing nearby
(2 Samuel 11:2).

he blew a blatant kiss across the room
before she knew the tenor of his song;
then there were stolen whiffs of her perfume,
when sin was in no hurry to be wrong.

glances of covert whim made picture frames
of every gesture and enticing flirt,
until, infernoed by expanding flames,
wisdom gave up the will to be alert.

forbidden hands with God-forbidden touch
empires of darkness took for golden light;
and when stark wine waxed bitter from too much,
the crumbling of her pie poisoned his bite.

bathsheba, on her unrepentant roof
secrets exposed where sacredness should pose;
uncontrite royalty slain by slight proof,
a lofty tower withered by a rose.
