The art piece pictured and to which this poem is a response is called “God Save Us”, made in reply to the shooting of a Black man, Mark Duggan, by London police in 2011.
I’m not sure how “on” it is for a white person such as myself to “respond” to this piece, but I thought that I’d be pretty safe with a haiku.
All this black/white/gay/straight/woman/man grates my nerves at times because we all run red. We all know pain. It's the very labels that separate us, although I would be ignorant to not acknowledge the importance of their existence in regard to injustice. Which, as I have witnessed and experienced first hand, does exist.
But still, that we feel we need a disclaimer to post our feelings about prejudice because of what we aren't is saddening at times. Because what we ALL are is human.
