we were soldiers

we were soldiers once and young
all with honor and glory unsung
bound together in blood and pain
sorrow, joy, and tears that stain
I fought for my country bravely though
my fear inside was hidden, not shown

advancing the line, with people dying
children crying, I fought for a country
whose citizens take my blood for granted
I held my best friend as he died
he was only 19, a green beret, but i survived

to this day I wonder why it had
to be him and not i...
I deserve that hand he was dealt
I think back to that situation
and ask my self one single question...
"would I take his place without hesitation?"
right away i answer with my decision...
YES.

but i guess no one will understand
what its truly like out there
until they hold a gun and hear the
bullets whizzing through the air
So... to the People of the
United states of America... I am defined as:
EXPENDABLE
