My Adult Life
My adult life began
with a book poking out
of my stepmother’s bag,
a mix of smoke and legs
on its cover.
And a devilish swear
that reeled me in: Switch Bitch.
So arch and scandalous,
it must be yours, young man,
and one small theft would not be missed
between the morning’s hush and tick:
especially since I’d already tried on
my stepmother’s heels and lipstick.
