I see a lot of self-help-y pop culture stuff about "taking up space" that is well meaning, but frankly rather aggressive. I believe there's enough oxygen for all of us.

This is a huge lesson that I feel is so often overlooked in a relationship...possibly the point where it might/could be permanently detrimental.

What tremendous insight that just wallops you over the head with perfect common sense.... I really love how the idea was born out of a joke, morphing into what I feel is really profound!

Unfortunately, I think many relationships are unbalanced this way. For me, it's always been a struggle to live fully "out loud"... I think I was mostly trained not to step on toes. So, I'm learning...

Hell, own the room!  
Personally, I am an absolute horrible (karaoke) singer.  But once in awhile, someone dares me once too much to get up there and make an ass of myself.  So I do that much pretty easily!  Lol.  
You are an actual musician and singer!  Tell them all to back away and give you your stage!  
And rock on!

Thank you, Styx! Singing seems to have become my way out of the box. I'm getting pretty comfortable owning my stage now in music... other areas of life are still a work in progress, but I'm learning.

If I could find some karaoke here in my little town, I'd be all over it!! 😎

How's that saying go? "You do you!".   Life is supposed to have its fun times, too.  Lord knows I've done some silly things, or something I suck at, all for the sake of the fun.  
And, if it's honing a talent, like your singing, then it has its own obvious reward.  
No one can stop our fun drive!  Lol.
