With You My Love
for Kyle Gallner
after a wonderful dream
She was old and alone, and her days were filled with sadness and emptiness.
She'd never had children. Her one dream in life had been to find true love. But she hadn’t had much luck with men.
She went to the library. Books were her only source of joy now, of comfort.
She selected three books. She walked to the reception desk and prepared to check out.
It seemed there was a quiet commotion. An old man was arguing with the librarian.
"Don’t you understand?" he was saying. " I need to find this book." He held a notecard out in front of him.
She squinted her eyes and read the name of the book. It was one she knew well.
She cleared her throat and tapped him on the shoulder and said quietly, "I can help you with that, sir."
And the old man turned around to face her.
It was him.
She'd never forgotten his face. He had been a movie star when she was young. She'd been helplessly infatuated with him. The beautiful face and angelic, curling hair… It was still there, just older.
He seemed to soften as he looked at her. "Miss, do you know of this book?"
She felt herself grow courageous. "Yes, Mr. Gallner. I can show you where it is if you like." She suddenly worried if her usage of his name would upset him.
But he seemed glad she knew who he was.
"I'm relieved," he said. "It seems you're the only one who can help me. Please, show me the way."
She helped him locate the book.
He turned to face her and looked deeply into her eyes. Warmth and genuine affection shone on his face.
"So, Miss…?"
"Tina, Mr. Gallner. Please, call me 'Tina.'"
"Tina. Have dinner with me tomorrow."
And her heart surged with joy.
"Yes."
As she drove home, she felt giddy with happiness and excitement. She felt young again. Nothing was more delicious than hope. She turned on the radio. The singer's voice lifted through the air.
"With you, my love
The day seems so much brighter
With you, my love
I feel alive
With you, my love
The world seems so much kinder
With you, my love
I feel alive…"
That night, when she went to sleep, she dreamed about him. They were young again. He was running toward her and he caught her in his arms, kissing her and laughing with her.
She died in her sleep peacefully, and with a smile on her lips.
