Being at boarding school much of my childhood, this was not an option -- however there was a little-frequented library with sumptuous old settee-chairs with wicker sides and very long cushions ...

If I had to stay in school after dark I’d have cracked. maybe I’m thinking of jennings and derbyshire, and billy bunter or even tom brown, but I’m imagining dorms, and bullying, and only moments of privacy. but then again, I read too much as a kid :)

The felt experience was a bit like that, even if the 'objective reality' was somewhat kinder. But a dorm of 30 boys - no privacy.
