A Romantic Land

Once upon a time in a romantic land,
a land where girls are women in early teens
a land where laws are always made by man
and conservative law is religiously mean.

Into a stony stubbled field of wheat
terrified stumbling's of torn white feet
upon hard brown earth and flinty stone
by the law taken, woman makes low moan.

Illicit lover like she, fearfull and soon
will dance to the self same dreadful tune
will dance till drenched, quite red in the face,
will dance till breathless, gone all trace.

Farmers, fathers, priests of that land,
hefting in sun browned callused hand
woman and lover make low moans,
soon to be silence by thrown stones.
