Before I take my leave
I believe I owe many of you here a proper farewell
Though is customary to bereave after one’s departure
I conceive that the burden of memory falls on your shoulders
After I take my leave
But before I take my leave
We must all agree we’ve had some great times together
The compositions I conceived on this side of the universe
Surely must’ve achieved a footnote in some of your memories
After I take my leave
Yet before I take my leave
Understand I’m somewhat relieved to know my time is near
I appreciate our relationships even more with every passing second
It may sound naïve to say such things before crossing over that bridge
After I take my leave
And before I take my leave
I perceive that the grieving process is different for everyone
But if you retrieve those recollections of music, of love, of laughter
Also think of me driving, striving, trying to be filled with joie de vivre
After I take my leave
On the eve before I take my leave
Know I wore my heart on my sleeve being true and honest to the core
I do hope I weaved a feel good story to tell after I’ve said my farewells
So please receive my love and respect if you remember me for a brief moment

Thank you Blue. I know some may be closer than others, and others don't know exactly when, but accepting the inevitable might the hardest but most logical thing we can ever do.

Thank you robert, I appreciate that. I know the comp called for a rhyme scheme, but I figured I tried a slightly different approach.

This is really well done. I really like the repetition in the first and last line of each stanza, with the opening line beckoning the reader in and the last line leading leading the reader out; but with something to carry. It’s interesting to me, when I really think about death, because we always carry something of another person in our memory.

Thank you so much for your comment and RL. I've always thought repetition helps drive the idea deeper, but I also wanted to be practical, accepting the inevitable, trying to be sympathetic. I remember when a close family friend passed away. I couldn't fathom the pain she was going through, but she showed strength.

Reflection and looking back is probably what must go through the mind. From time to time I try to remember names and faces of people I went to school with and worked with over the years. I can only imagine at the end, the brain will retrieve every little detail in very little time.

Love the retrospection mixed with an awareness of the sad understanding of nearing the end... It's haunting and just reads as refreshingly honest and authentic. You really crafted your approach and idea so wonderfully well that it adds to the already heady emotionality of the poem. I connect and deeply feel the vibe your pen imprinted.

I've always wondered what my "famous last words" may be or where I'd be, but for folks who have been given a pre-determined amount of time, this must be a more serious note on what to think and feel before accepting our fate. Mixing a logical approach to another wise emotional farewell while still being honest felt like the only thing I could do.
