Moon over Camp Hope

this town has her secrets
they settle on the southern hills
when it rains
& the memories of my ancestors
callused hands
still hold her close

I wonder if they hear it too
her people grieving
for their families, their jobs
their broken homes & backs
as they fall through cracks
and disappear with every single drop

Her mountains are beautiful
our protectors
snow covered peaks
bringing bittersweet sorrow
to the lost at Camp Hope
heart of this town

But she grows as cold & divided
as the hands of her people
huddled in thin canvas tents
and dilapidated RVs
desperate for a decent meal
a safe bed....a smile

I can smell the rain in the air
& I know what's coming
may the Gods help us all
this town and I
both have our secrets
but I only told the moon

Author's Note
Inspired by my hometown, the homeless camp down the road and every soul that lives there. The police harassment & restraining orders placed against them, the court cases, squatters rights and all the people who think it's ok to treat fellow humans as a burden when it's mucking up the view....this is for you.
