Pizza in the Wind

Lunch time was quickly approaching
His stomach was giving him a holler
Today the cafeteria was serving pizza
And he was down to his last few dollars

When the computer said twelve o’clock
He walked out of the office in a hurry
Nothing, nobody would get in his way
Because his vision was getting blurry

And today turned out to be a blustery day
The breeze caressed him gently in the face
The smell of the food all around called him
Leaving our protagonist in a dreamy daze

He asked for one slice of pepperoni pizza
You could see the grease sliding down
No worries, he’d dab it with it napkin
In a few minutes he would go to town

He was walking with a spring in his step
Admiring what was on the paper plate
Salivating, his stomaching kept growling
But something sinister seemed to wait

Suddenly a strong gust of wind betrayed him
Making the slice fly high up in the air
As if the wind said “the fuck out of here”
Filling his heart and mind with despair

In slow motion he watched it take flight
Like broken hearted poetry in the breeze
A lonely angelic voice captured the moment
Pepperoni detaching from grease and cheese

He wouldn’t be fast enough to catch it
But in public he didn’t want to look the fool
If it landed safe somewhere on the pavement
He thought about the three second rule

But not today, as luck would have it
It landed on the grass with a slapping thud
Because after the rain the pizza in the wind
Became a slice of pizza in the sticky mud
