The Legend of the Myst Phoenix’s Children
Long before the first of the bloodline were ever born, the Myst phoenix was known to all. Brilliant blue birds of fire and mist, gifted with the ability to be ever reborn in flame. They represented the memories and hopes of the people and every present cycle of life, death and rebirth that keeps the world in the balance. They had both the power to heal and to destroy.
Yet, their power came with downsides. Because of their power, people sought to control them for their own purposes. Myst Phoenix feathers were believed to have healing properties, even when separated from the phoenix itself. Their fire was feared, but people desperate enough to seek their feathers did not care if the phoenix it came from was dead or alive. Over the years, their numbers dwindled and eventually there was only one phoenix left. Many sought the bird, to no end, until one night one succeeded. The hunter was not hunting for personal reasons but rather for the profit it would bring. He saw the Myst phoenix flying through a stormy sky and he took his shot. A piercing cry rent the skies as the shot found its mark. The hunter was certain that no one would have ventured out this far in a storm as dreadful as the one that day. Rightfully fearful of the phoenix’s fire, he thought he would wait for the bird to pass in the shelter of his hunting blind.
However he was not alone in the forest, two children were wandering the storm tossed woods at that time. They heard the cry and they sought its source. They found the phoenix and noting its wound they approached with caution. Seeing that they meant no harm, the phoenix allowed them to approach. They took the phoenix with them. Returning home they tended as best they could to the hunters' wounds. The phoenix grew stronger, but knew this would not be the last hunter.
So, recognizing the strength and courage of those who had come to his rescue, the phoenix called on the Gods of the land. He called on Vorbris, Minerva, tempus, Amare, and Thylin. He asked that his flame be passed to the children and to their bloodline from now on so that the mission of the Myst Phoenix should not die with him. The Gods answered his call. They gifted the bloodline with the gifts of the Phoenix. Each also left their own gift for the bloodline, recognizing the difficulty that they would face. Vorbris left an innate sense for those who were truly innocent. Minerva gifted them a strong mind for strategy. Tempus and Thylin gifted them the ability to age slowly and live long and Amare gifted them a strong love of the beauty of the natural world. From the Phoenix they gained the fire that could rewrite the web of reality, the ability to be reborn in that fire, the ability to step from one place to another in the blink of an eye, the vault of memory that existed outside of where their fire could touch and the ability to heal those in great need. They swore to uphold the mission to maintain the balance and to bring hope wherever they went. As they spoke the words, the fire inscribed the oath on their very being
And so the children of the Myst Phoenix were born, acquiring their gifts between the ages of 5-8 to fulfill the mission that had once been given to the phoenix. They were warned by the Gods that their gifts must be guarded and even kept hidden wherever possible, but as the fire touched them, thin blue lines appeared on their upper arms and across their brow. This became known as the mark of the Phoenix.
