Dreams of Ameline

- Dreams of Ameline -

We met at the library each and every day, for oh so very many years,
And, I helped you with your studies and projects, you always smiled...
When I created works of art for you and your family; you were elated!
Never sad, always smiling, your eyes wide and filled with such light,
As if light might arise from the rich brown of some life-giving soil...
Such were your eyes to me, when in them I wanted to just drift away.
Your skin was dark and beautiful, so lovely in the youth of your life,
And the tresses of your raven black hair were to me most softly spun...
As if on the loom of night's creating, which some god made in its' art.
You were slender and sweet, compassionate to me in my darkest hour!
We shared deeper feelings than friends, and so I shed countless tears,
When back to your home country your family took you, dearest child.
The two bracelets I gave you, one for you and one for me fair created,
With art and craft of skillful making, were in their colors to me bright.
To me you were a princess, more worthy of that title than any royal...
How many times I painted your portrait, recalling you as clear as day!
In some other reality perhaps, you would have become my dear wife,
But in an instant, all my dreams of us were by your family all undone...
When in the name of tradition they decided it was time for us to part.
But I never forgot you, more precious was your heart than any flower!
That time I gave you money to buy candy, you had called me the best,
And once you asked me, if I would keep meeting you in that library...
When I never thought our dates would end, as our love grew so deep!
We held each other's hands, kissed each other's lips, and no one knew.
Only we two, and in our hearts burned the most intense of true fires...
Your family, was oblivious to the flame that between us was blazing,
Or, they did not care, believing they knew better for your life's worth.
All I knew was what I dreamed of us each night, what I kept hoping...
Until all hope was gone, and with it you the object of such affection!
Each afternoon with you was like a golden memory of a bygone age.
How oft I lay awake in the night, sleepless at times, deprived of rest!
Wanting you to be in my arms when I awoke; you my noble divinity.
How fast the time we spent together seemed to go, each day to leap,
Into the starry bosom of evening time, which no power could undo!
It is as if you vanished one day, leaving me to remember our desires.
And so my mind let you go, though my heart found you so amazing,
That it kept a place for your memory, apart from all else upon Earth.
I still have a copy of the portraits I created and despite all my coping,
Some of my dreams are still of you, filled with our loving attraction.
How many times do I write of you, only to tear up every single page!

We were both so much younger, but now it is like another life...
When we were innocent, and the world filled with far less strife.
Too much was lived long since, and even more have I so seen...
But our time together stays with me, my dear long lost Ameline!
