Unmerited Gift of Life

To all the honest women
I have loved, please
accept my apologies.

When I asked for what was
most precious in your life,
you gave it willingly. When
we loved; you were my only
one for a season, a shining jewel.

Now, some of us are
learning to face endings.
Let us be honest and
pure in sharing of
what has been given us.
Let us celebrate
temporal human pleasure,
giving all to what remains.

The warm breasts and
moist unions of this night
will one day be reduced to ash.

But, tonight, let us dance
in careless writhing, pressing
deep into the unmerited gift of life.

Author's Note
A recent false positive on a medical test made me look at mortality more clearly for a few days. In this poem, I'm thinking of the beautiful women who've given so much for the pleasure I've had in this life.
